Why Your Trade Business Isn't Showing on Google (And How to Fix It)

Six real reasons your plumbing, electrical or building business isn't ranking on Google — plus how to fix each one.

You've got a website. You've been in business for years. So why, when someone searches for a plumber (or electrician, or roofer) in your area, are you nowhere to be seen?

This is one of the most frustrating situations for tradespeople, and it's more common than you'd think. Here are the real reasons it happens — and what you can do to fix each one.

Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Incomplete or Unverified

This is the most common reason trade businesses don't show up in local searches. Google's local pack — the map and three businesses that appear at the top of local searches — is almost entirely driven by your Google Business Profile.

If you haven't verified your profile, haven't filled in all the sections, or set up your profile with incorrect information, Google won't trust it enough to show you.

Fix it: Go to business.google.com, claim and verify your profile, and fill in every single section. Make sure your category is correct (e.g. "Plumber" not just "Contractor"), your service area is set up properly, and your opening hours are accurate.

Reason 2: You Have No Reviews (Or Worse, Bad Ones)

Google uses reviews as a signal of trust and quality. A business with no reviews simply cannot compete with a business that has 40 five-star ratings.

Fix it: Start asking every happy customer for a Google review. Make it easy — send them a direct link to your review page. Even getting ten to fifteen good reviews in the next month can make a noticeable difference to your local rankings.

Reason 3: Your Website Is Too Thin

A website with only a few pages and minimal content gives Google very little to work with. If your homepage says "John Smith Plumbing — call us for all plumbing needs" and nothing else, Google can't determine what you do, where you do it, or why you're the best option.

Fix it: Build out your website with dedicated pages for each service and each area you cover. Write real, detailed content on each page — not just a few lines, but proper descriptions of the service, who it's for, and why customers should choose you.

Reason 4: Your NAP Is Inconsistent

Your business Name, Address, and Phone number need to be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory you're listed on. Even small inconsistencies — "Street" vs "St," or an old phone number on an outdated directory — can confuse Google and suppress your rankings.

Fix it: Search for your business name online and audit every listing. Update anything that doesn't match exactly.

Reason 5: Your Website Has Technical Problems

A website that loads slowly, has broken pages, isn't secure (no HTTPS), or blocks search engines from crawling it will not rank well regardless of how good your content is.

Fix it: Run your site through Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights. Fix any indexing errors, enable HTTPS if it's not already on, and address any speed issues flagged.

Reason 6: Your Competitors Are Simply Better Optimised

Sometimes the reason you're not showing is the most straightforward one: your competitors have invested more in their online presence than you have. They've got more reviews, more content, better backlinks, and a more optimised Google Business Profile.

Fix it: This one requires a proper SEO strategy. It takes time, but every improvement you make to your online presence moves you closer to overtaking them.

The Most Important Step You Can Take Right Now

If you're a tradesperson not showing on Google, start with your Google Business Profile today. It's free, it takes a couple of hours to set up properly, and it's the single biggest lever you have in local search. From there, work on getting reviews and improving your website.
