Every plumber wants to be the first result when someone in their area searches "plumber near me." Here's exactly how to make that happen — no jargon, no fluff.
Step 1: Sort Out Your Google Business Profile
If you do nothing else on this list, do this. Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is what controls whether you appear in the local pack — the map section at the top of Google results that captures the most clicks for local searches.
Set it up at business.google.com if you haven't already. Make sure every section is filled in: business name, address, phone number, website, opening hours, services, and a proper business description with relevant keywords. Upload at least twenty photos of your work, your van, and your team. Add every service you offer individually in the Services section.
And get reviews. Reviews are one of the biggest local ranking factors. Ask every satisfied customer to leave you a Google review. A plumber with 50 five-star reviews will consistently outrank a plumber with 5 reviews, all else being equal.
Step 2: Make Sure Your Website Has the Right Pages
A one-page website won't cut it. Google needs pages it can rank for specific searches. You need at minimum:
A homepage targeting your main location and service (e.g. "Plumber in Leeds"). Dedicated service pages for each thing you offer — boiler installation, boiler repair, bathroom fitting, emergency call-outs, leak detection, and so on. Location pages targeting the specific towns and areas you cover.
Each page should be optimised for the specific keyword it's targeting. That means having the keyword in the title tag, the H1 heading, the first paragraph, and naturally throughout the page content.
Step 3: Get Your NAP Consistent Everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your business details across the web to verify you're a legitimate, established business. If your business name is listed slightly differently on different directories — "J Smith Plumbing Ltd" on one site and "J Smith Plumbers" on another — that inconsistency weakens your local rankings.
Get listed on the major directories: Yell, Yelp, Checkatrade, TrustATrader, and relevant industry directories. Make sure your name, address, and phone number are identical on every single one.
Step 4: Build Your Website's Authority
Google needs to trust your website before it'll rank it at the top. Trust is largely built through backlinks — other websites linking to yours. For a plumbing business, this means getting listed in trade directories, earning links from local news sites, suppliers, and trade associations, and building relationships with complementary businesses (estate agents, letting agents, property developers) who might link to or recommend you.
The quality of backlinks matters far more than quantity. One link from a respected local news site is worth more than fifty links from random directories.
Step 5: Create Content That Answers Your Customers' Questions
A blog isn't just for big companies. A plumber who publishes genuinely useful articles — "signs your boiler needs replacing," "how to prevent frozen pipes in winter," "how to find a water leak under the floor" — builds topical authority that pushes their site up the rankings.
Each article targets additional keywords and brings in more traffic. Over time, the compounding effect of regular content is significant.
Step 6: Make Sure Your Website is Fast and Works on Mobile
Google prioritises websites that load quickly and work properly on smartphones. Most plumbing searches happen on mobile — someone's standing in their kitchen with a burst pipe. If your website takes five seconds to load or is impossible to navigate on a phone, Google notices and ranks you lower.
Use Google PageSpeed Insights to test your site speed. If it's scoring below 70 on mobile, you need to fix it.
The Honest Truth
Getting to the top of Google for competitive plumbing searches isn't easy or fast. It takes consistent effort over six to twelve months. But once you're there, the leads are free and consistent — and your competitors have to work just as hard to take your spot.
