The Complete Guide to Google Business Profile for Tradesmen (2026)

How to set up and optimise your Google Business Profile so you actually show up in the local pack — written for tradespeople.

    By ClickBoosters team

If you're a tradesperson and you want to appear on Google Maps and in local search results, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the most important thing you can set up. It's free, it's powerful, and most tradespeople either haven't done it at all or have done it badly.

This guide covers everything you need to know to get it right.

    What Is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile is Google's free tool that lets you control how your business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "plumber in Leeds," the businesses that appear in the map section — the local pack — are there because of their Google Business Profile.

Getting into that local pack is enormously valuable. Those three listings at the top of local searches get the majority of clicks. If you're not there, you're invisible to the highest-intent customers in your area.

    Setting Up Your Profile Correctly

Head to business.google.com and claim your profile. If your business already has a listing (Google sometimes auto-generates them), claim it rather than creating a duplicate.

Business name: Use your real business name. Don't stuff keywords into it (e.g. don't call yourself "John Smith Plumber Emergency Plumbing Leeds") — Google has cracked down on this and it can get your listing suspended.

Category: Choose the most specific primary category that describes your business. "Plumber," "Electrician," "Roofer," etc. You can add secondary categories too — for example a plumber might also add "Heating Contractor" and "Bathroom Remodeler."

Service area: If you go to customers (rather than customers coming to you), set your service area rather than showing your home address. Add every town and postcode district you cover.

Phone number: Use a local number if possible. Toll-free numbers can slightly reduce trust for local searches.

Website: Link to your website homepage, or even better, a specifically optimised landing page.

Optimising Your Profile for Better Rankings

Just having a profile isn't enough — you need to optimise it properly.

Services: Fill in every service you offer using the built-in Services section. Be specific: don't just say "Plumbing" — add "Boiler Installation," "Boiler Repair," "Emergency Plumbing," "Leak Detection," and so on. Each service you add is another keyword your profile can rank for.

Business description: Write a proper 750-character description that includes your primary keywords naturally. Mention your location, your trade, your key services, and what makes you different. Don't stuff it with keywords — write it like you'd explain your business to a new customer.

Photos: Upload at least 20–30 photos. Include photos of your work (before and after if possible), your van, your team, any accreditations or qualifications, and your logo. Profiles with more photos get significantly more views and click-throughs.

Posts: Use Google Posts to share updates, offers, completed jobs, and seasonal tips. Posts keep your profile active, which Google rewards with better visibility.

    Getting and Managing Reviews

Reviews are one of the most powerful ranking factors for your Google Business Profile. The number of reviews, their overall rating, and how recently they were left all influence where you appear.

The best way to get reviews is simply to ask. After every job, send your customer a text or email saying something like: "Thanks for choosing us — if you're happy with the work, it would mean a lot if you could leave us a quick Google review. Here's the link: [your review link]." Most satisfied customers will do it.

Respond to every review — good and bad. Responding to positive reviews shows you appreciate your customers. Responding professionally to negative reviews shows potential customers that you take your reputation seriously.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't use a virtual office address to appear in a city you don't actually operate from. Google checks these and can suspend your listing.

Don't buy fake reviews. Google's systems detect them and it can result in your entire profile being suspended.

Don't ignore your profile once it's set up. Regular updates, new photos, and fresh reviews keep it healthy and ranking well.

How Long Until You See Results?

A well-optimised Google Business Profile can start improving your local rankings within a few weeks. Combined with a strong website and consistent reviews, it's typically the fastest way to improve your local search visibility.
